“Tagi Shrine”:

Since old time the six gods have been enshrined in “Tagi Shrine”.

They say that in the first year of “Ninna era” (885AD), the two gods in “Nagayuke Shrine”, which were for water gate in Mie Prefecture, were divided and the two branch deities were granted to “Tagi Shrine” to be enshrined. They say it’s because Tagi Shrine was located at the confluence of 2 rivers and suffered from floods often.

Tagi Shrine’s name has changed some times in the course of time. It used to be called “Takidaimyoujin Shrine” which was named after “Takihara no Miya Shrine”. (Takihara no Miya Shrine oversaw Nagayuke Shrine mentioned in above.) In Muromachi period military steward “Iwamuro Ietoshi” incorporated the letters “gi”, which can express the large and stable trees, into the shrine name. It is said the current shrine name Tagi Shrine originates from that change.

A lot of “Snow-break anemone” (Anemone keiskeana) bloom beautifully, protected carefully by the people there.

“Religious festival of “Tagi Shrine”:

“Kenketo Dance” of “Tagi Shrine” has spread to the 3 areas, “Iwamuro area” in Kouka-cho, “Maeno area” in Tsuchiyama-cho and “Tokuhara area” in Tsuchiyama-cho.

Children perform the dance to live music at the shrine and also at other various places, putting on the crowns which are called “Shagama” and are made of the feathers of peacocks or mountain birds.

“Hanabai” is another feature of this festival. A “Hanagasa” pole which is ornamented richly with artificial red flowers on its upper half parades through the town by participants' hand-carry. When the pole reaches the shrine, worshippers try to topple the pole and scramble for the flowers on the pole to take them home, because it is said those flowers can protect people from misfortunes. They call the scramble by worshippers “Hanabai”.
